First Drafts of Ancillary Products

Here are the first drafts for my inside album pages, my front pages and poster respectively. These were made using mainly stock images in order to give an idea of what I wanted my final products to look like. I plan to take photographs, such as my own crumpled paper for the back cover, and either take photos or create my own wooden textures for the front cover and poster cork board designs. I will ask for feedback in a hot desking task (4th March) of these products and my music video, and take this feedback into consideration when creating my final pieces.

Music Video First Draft

This is the first draft of my music video. This ended up taking a long time to produce, due to studio complications, booking times and multiple footage issues and shooting problems, but with better planning, this then became a lot easier to complete the filming of. I then edited the piece together and this is the first finished draft I have produced:

Digipak Initial Plan

These are my initial plans for my digipak, which I will develop in Photoshop in order to create a first mock-up, with use of stock images and photography of my own, in order to help shape my ideas for the final product. I decided on a 3x1 double sided digipak, totalling 6 sides, including a front, back, 3 main inside pages and the disc page, which will be in a plastic casing in the very centre of the digipak when fully expanded. I will include a page for lyrics from the full album (which in this case will be 'What Separates Me From You' by A Day To Remember, because this is the album my music video is from), a message from the band which would act as something special to help sell the digipak over the regular CD format, and a page for a photograph of the band with instruments. I will also have the standard front and back pages for the digipak, with the front displaying the artist name and album title, as this will be the first thing seen by an audience buying this product in a store or online. The back page will show the track listings for the album, as well as labels the band are signed to, which could act as a selling point, because large labels generally give a sense of assured quality in terms of the finished product.

New Plan for Music Video

This is the new plan for my music video, for which I will create storyboard images.

 

[Day 1] The beginning will look unprofessional, looking like an internet video or vlog of covering a song poorly. This will take place before the main video. I will then move into attempts to make gigs, speaking with people outside venues. This will be intercut with poorly played instruments in a low-budget setting like a garden or garage. This should last until the first chorus or potentially the beginning of the second verse.

 

[Day X1] I will show extreme close-ups of the correct piano keys being played, writing down notes on paper to show the act of songwriting. I will show attempts to busk, with close-ups of counting coins in hand. I will show a poor attempt at editing together a video.

[Day X2] This will begin in 1 of 2 different music shops, showing the singer picking up different instruments and handing over money at the till. Then the instruments would be set in the college TV studio but not played, I will attempt to get access to a stage and a microphone to show a successful gig without instruments. Then show the second music store, this time finding the perfect guitar pick, showing ECUs of different ones before finding the perfect one, on which I will pull focus to draw attention to it, then show it being bought with a MLS. I'll then show moderately well edited footage, potentially re-using my old footage or some used for research.

 

 

[Day X3] I will show the professional set up in the studio, complete with lights. I will show close-ups of the light panel switches and show the effect of them, through the studio window. I will keep a camera positioned in the same place, with all instruments in place, and overlay the images and crop them so they appear together, each video will be individual, showing 1 person on all the instruments at the same time, and show this in an editing window with an over-the-shoulder shot with a crowd standing behind as the lead actor can be seen speaking about it will the video plays in the background. The screen will fade out with the music and then show playing the piano similar to the beginning, then getting up and turning off the camera.

Plans to re-shoot video

I initially recorded footage for my music video on 26th October, but have since found that the footage I had was very grainy and unclear, most likely due to the chroma key and lighting used when recording, which I will refrain from using when I go to re-record the footage. I will also incorporate more angles and attempt to have the pace of the video made faster by the use of faster edits. I found this necessary after looking over and reviewing the footage I had shot and when I first tried to edit it together. Most of the angles used were front facing, and I feel that I need more variety in shots, which I will do when I come to record again. The amount of footage I had was enough, with around 5 times the length of the video in raw footage, just that there was a lack of variety and that some footage was low quality, which I wouldn't want to use in my work. Some of the footage remained clear and usable and I intend on using this as well as the new footage when that is shot. I still want to use the same location and actors, I will just make sure the footage is clear and high quality before I attempt to record anything. I look to record at some point between now and the end of December, giving myself time to edit together a first draft before the start of the new term in January. I will then have a session of hot desking, or peer review, in which I will take on considerations from my peers and adapt my work based on how they respond to the specific things I ask about my video.
